The Trade, Explained

What a Low Voltage Contractor Does

A low voltage contractor installs and maintains the systems in a building that run below 50 volts: network cabling, security cameras, access control, Wi-Fi, phone systems, and AV. Your electrician powers the building — a low voltage contractor makes it work: the Cat6 behind every wall jack, the cameras over every entrance, the badge reader on the server room door, and the switches and firewalls that keep it all talking.

It's a distinct trade with its own standards. Our installations follow TIA-568 cabling specs, BICSI design practice, and the NEC articles that govern communications wiring. Every cable run is qualification-tested with Trend Networks gear and delivered with a written test report — if a drop can't pass certification, we redo it, not excuse it.

Most commercial projects touch several systems at once — a restaurant build-out needs POS cabling, guest Wi-Fi on its own VLAN, cameras, and a phone line; an office needs drops, access control, and a rack that isn't a fire hazard. Hiring one low voltage company for all of it means one design, one point of contact, and no finger-pointing between vendors.

FAQ

Low Voltage Contractor FAQ

What is a low voltage contractor?
A low voltage contractor installs and maintains systems that operate below 50 volts — security cameras, structured cabling (Cat6/Cat6A/fiber), access control, VoIP phone systems, and network infrastructure. It's a separate trade from electrical work: your electrician brings power to the building, a low voltage contractor makes the building's data, security, and communications systems work.
What's the difference between a low voltage contractor and an electrician?
Electricians work on line voltage — the 120/240-volt wiring that powers lights, outlets, and equipment. Low voltage contractors work on systems under 50 volts: network cabling, cameras, access control, phones, and Wi-Fi. The two trades often work side by side on new construction; ICTAlly coordinates with your electrician and general contractor so conduit, pathways, and power for network racks are planned correctly from rough-in.
How much do low voltage installations cost in Middle Tennessee?
Real ranges from our project data: structured cabling runs $150–$400 per drop installed and tested, commercial camera systems run $500 to $5,000+ depending on camera count, and our managed small-business network is $500 setup plus $125/month. Every job is quoted after a free on-site assessment — see our low voltage cost guide for detailed pricing.
How do I vet a low voltage company before hiring one?
Ask for a certificate of insurance (general liability + workers' comp), ask whether cable runs are tested and documented, and ask who actually shows up — employees or subcontractors. We wrote a full checklist in our guide: what to look for in a Nashville low voltage contractor. ICTAlly provides a COI on request and delivers a Trend Networks test report with every cabling job.
Do you handle service calls and repairs, or only new installations?
Both. Alongside full installations we handle repairs and service calls — a camera that went dark, a dead network drop, a door controller acting up, or emergency fiber repair. Managed clients get 24/7 monitoring and priority response; everyone else can call (629) 280-2800 and a real person answers.
Which areas do your low voltage installers cover?
We're headquartered in Brentwood and cover 16 cities across Middle Tennessee — Nashville, Franklin, Murfreesboro, Clarksville, Hendersonville, and the surrounding metro. If you're searching for a low voltage contractor near you anywhere in the Nashville region, we're within about 30 minutes of your site.
